Toddler Environment

“Help me help myself.” – Maria Montessori

At Connections Early Learning & Childcare Centre in downtown Calgary, our toddler environment is intentionally designed to nurture independence, emotional resilience, and a deep sense of belonging. Guided by Montessori’s principle of helping children do things for themselves, we support toddlers in growing at their own pace—confident, capable, curious, and connected.

A Blended Approach to Learning

Our toddler program draws from Montessori, Reggio Emilia, Emergent Curriculum, nature-based learning, and whole-child development. This blended approach allows us to create a dynamic, inclusive, and responsive early learning environment that supports the diverse needs of toddlers in our Calgary childcare community.

Order & Predictability

Toddlers thrive in consistent environments. Our classrooms use clear organization, predictable routines, and stable educator relationships to build emotional security, confidence, and trust.

Hands-On Learning

Our toddler rooms are filled with open-ended, hands-on, sensory-rich materials that encourage movement, exploration, and discovery. Through active play, toddlers strengthen fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and independence.

Repetition Builds Mastery

Each morning includes a 2–3 hour uninterrupted work cycle. Toddlers have time to repeat activities, master new skills, and learn at their own rhythm using Montessori and Reggio-inspired materials that support focus, independence, and confidence.

Communication & Connection

Language and connection are central to toddler development. We support communication through sign language, Grace & Courtesy lessons, daily foreign language exposure, and responsive conversation. These practices build empathy, emotional expression, and social skills.

Respectful Independence

Children are encouraged to use the restroom independently, make snack choices, care for their environment, and engage in conversation. Educators model patience, kindness, and emotional regulation, helping toddlers build autonomy and self-awareness.

Growing with Purpose

Our toddler program reflects the heart of the Connections philosophy: every child is resilient, capable, curious, and full of potential. Through nurturing care, social-emotional learning, and high-quality early learning experiences, toddlers build confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning.
